FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about Ving Tsun Kung Fu.  If you do not see your question listed, please feel free to ask via our contact page.

How do I start? The intro possess is two classes and costs $50, and comes with a uniform shirt and shoes. The first class is a semi-private or private lesson that introduces you to the system and ends with addressing any questions you may have. The second class introduces you to the manner in which you will be training with other practitioners. The intros are by appointment.

How much is it? Tuition is $160 per month and there are substantial discounts for those who choose to pay in advance.

Are there belts? No. Your progress is mapped by experience and training time, making belts and tests unnecessary. There are no belts to buy, and no testing fees.

Didn’t Bruce Lee study Ving Tsun? Yes. Late grandmaster Yip Man was Bruce Lee’s sifu. We practice the same art of the same lineage.

What if I am not that athletic? You need not be flexible or “athletic” for Ving Tsun Kung Fu training.  Because this martial art allows the practitioner to develop a superior fighting structure, questions of size, strength, age or fitness level can quickly become irrelevant.

How do you pronounce “Ving Tsun”? It is commonly pronounced “wing chun”, although this is only an English approximation of the Cantonese.

Do you offer classes for children? Not at this time, but we hope to in the future.

Why do you spell it Ving Tsun? The VT spelling is a transliteration introduced by Yip Man.  In the once British occupied territory of Hong Kong, WC was associated with the water closet, or lavatory.  Although there are other ideas that lead to the VT spelling, spelling Ving Tsun in a way that could be associated with the lavatory was not preferable.  It is often spelled Wing Chun in the United States without a second thought, likely because most Americans would not have any negative association with “WC”.

Is tuition negotiable?  No.
